Milwaukee’s largest solar installation comes online

A 6.85 MW landfill project in Wisconsin now powers 80 city buildings with renewable energy.

Milwaukee’s largest solar installation has come online at a capped landfill near Mitchell International Airport. The 6.85 MWdc project, developed by the city in conjunction with SunVest and We Energies, is now fully operational and will power 80 city buildings with 100% renewable energy. The site, engineered and built by SunVest under We Energies’s Renewable Pathway Program, immediately triples the city’s total solar capacity. [Source: Solar Builder]

The project breathes new life into the capped landfill, utilizing a ballasted racking system to hold panels in place by weight rather than anchoring them into the ground. The development includes a 4.6 MW solar farm built on the property in 2021. [Source: Solar Builder]
