California’s Battery Fleet Tops 21,000 MW as Solar Outpaces Natural Gas

The California Energy Commission says storage is becoming central to grid reliability—and helped solar use exceed natural gas in the first half of 2026.

California’s battery storage fleet has passed 21,000 megawatts, giving the state more capacity to hold daytime solar generation and supply electricity later in the day. The California Energy Commission reported total battery capacity of 21,112 MW, including utility-scale systems connected to the California grid and smaller systems installed at homes, schools, farms, businesses, and industrial sites. The change is showing up in the state’s electricity mix. The Commission said Californians used more solar than natural gas for the first time during the first half of 2026. Compared with January through June 2024, solar power usage was up 22% in the same period of 2026, natural gas usage was down 51%, and grid battery capacity had grown 80%.

For homeowners, the statewide figures do not mean every solar system will deliver the same savings or outage protection. Battery value still depends on system size, utility rate plan, controls, and the home’s backup-power goals. But the trend makes storage a more important question when comparing a new solar proposal or evaluating an existing system. California estimates it will need more than 52,000 MW of battery and long-duration storage by 2045.
