Newsom signs six bills to streamline EV charging and solar integration

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation to accelerate public charger deployment and cut permitting red tape for solar canopies and battery storage.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a suite of six bills into law on Thursday, aiming to accelerate the state’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and reduce permitting barriers for solar-forward charging projects. The legislation modernizes rules for public charger installations and clarifies that streamlined permitting applies to trenching, grid upgrades, and solar canopy projects.

SB 969 modernizes public charger installation rules to allow manufacturer-tested chargers to get online faster while maintaining safeguards. SB 1283, introduced by State Sen. Angelique Ashby, cuts red tape for EV charging installations, including solar canopy projects and battery storage, by clarifying that California’s streamlined permitting rules apply to related work.

The package also includes AB 1820, which introduces charging options and tears down permitting barriers around apartments and mixed-use housing developments. The state government says the laws are designed to solve practical problems that can make it harder, slower, or more expensive for Californians to choose an electric vehicle.
