Oakland startup Planted raises $31.8M for automated solar deployment

The funding will expand Planted's fleet of autonomous construction robots and support the rollout of its Sage installation robot.

Oakland-based autonomous solar deployment startup Planted has raised $31.8 million in a series funding round to expand its fleet of automated construction robots. The round was co-led by Piva Capital and RA Capital Management Planetary Health, with participation from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Gigascale Capital, Google, and Khosla Ventures.

Planted’s platform pairs project development software and digital twins with fixed-tilt, terrain-following racking and automated installation machinery. The company claims its arrays require only two acres per megawatt—roughly half the land footprint of standard single-axis trackers—and can cut structural balance-of-system steel requirements by up to 70%.

Planted plans to use the capital to expand its active robot fleet and support the field rollout of Sage, its next-generation installation robot, in late 2026. The company projects reaching 100 MW of field installations in 2026 and reports an active project pipeline exceeding 20 GW for developers, independent power producers, and enterprise energy consumers.
